SKIING ON THE SLOPES OF MOUNT ETNA
Mount Etna is known for its spectacular eruptions, moon-like
landscapes, craters and canyons craven out of lava, however the
largest active volcano in Europe also offers excellent conditions
for winter sports in a unique scenario. The Mediterranean blue
sea beneath and signs of the smoking crater at the top make skiing
down the slopes of the volcano a memorable experience. With a
height of approximately 3350 metres, Etna generally guarantees
snow from December up until the end of March; during this
period visitors can enjoy 1400 meters of downhill, cross-country
and alpine skiing.
There are two main ski centres on Etna, one on the North
side called Piano Provenzana surrounded by beautiful pine forests
and close to the town of Linguaglossa, the other on the South side
known as Rifugio Sapienza near Nicolosi. Both areas offer hotels,
chalets, ski lifts, various ski rentals and expert skiing instruction.
Winter activities include:
Skiing lessons for all levels
Alpine skiing to the summit crater
Cross-country skiing
Snowboarding
Snowkiting
Excursions with snowshoes to the summit crater
All these activities can be arranged together with transfers,
accommodation and general advice for a great day out.
